A frustrated Rob Edwards has called on Yerson Mosquera to stamp out ‘silly’ mistakes after the defender picked up an avoidable suspension in Wolves’ defeat to West Ham.
In a match where individual errors cost Wolves badly at the London Stadium, as they shipped four goals, Mosquera picked up a first half booking that has earned him a two-match suspension for the upcoming Leeds and Spurs games.
The defender was given the yellow card for gesturing to referee Jarred Gillett that a West Ham player should be booked, despite Wolves already receiving the free-kick.
Edwards was visibly frustrated when asked about Mosquera’s decision and when asked if it was the definition of a silly yellow card, the head coach said: “It certainly is, it’s really frustrating.
“It's a difficult one to take at the moment because you've been playing so well and now we’re missing him for a couple of games in that manner.
“It’s not good.”
He added: “That kind of thing has to be stamped out of his game.
“We know we're not allowed to do it - not just him - anyone.
“It's part of the game we don't want to see. Obviously, he gets punished in that manner with the yellow card, now he's going to learn the hard way and we're getting punished for it as well as a team.
“He's a really good player. He's made a mistake and he'll learn from it now.
“I think he's still a great age and he's got loads of good things going for him.
“No one's perfect. He's made a mistake and he'll learn.”
Edwards waiting for Mosquera and the officials at half-time before having words with both as they went down the tunnel.
When asked what was said, Edwards added: “I just wanted to ask him if he did it first of all and he said yes, so that's his mistake.
“I just asked him, did he do it? At that time, I've still got to try and keep my head, because I've got to make sure I speak to the group as well. Obviously, he knows he can't do that.
“Then I just didn't think it was a free-kick on the goalkeeper, from Adam Armstrong, in the build-up to the minute before the goal.
“I just didn't think it was a free-kick, so I was just speaking to him (the referee) about that.”
Wolves had made a solid start to the game but conceded shortly before half-time, ahead of a disastrous second half that condemned them to victory.
Edwards felt the scoreline did not reflect the story of the match.
“I thought we were the better side and started the game very well,” he said.
“First half we were pressing really well and we were good with the ball.
“We wanted to try and make more of our final action, we could have worked the goalkeeper more, but overall I thought the first half was a good performance, especially away from home.
“Then they punished us for that. They punished mistakes and those two quick-fire goals ultimately have cost us the game.
“It then became a really difficult last 20 minutes and we're trying to chase, we're trying to get something back in the game and we weren't able to do it. It was difficult.
”It's hard to sum it up in my head because from the first half performance, if someone said that at the end of the game we're going to lose this 4-0, I wouldn't have believed them.”
