David Moyes clarifies his stance on new Everton contract

Manager David Moyes has been discussing the prospect of a new contract at Everton

David Moyes would be happy to extend his Everton contract but insists there is no rush when it comes to negotiations as his team target a return to European football after a nine-year absence.

When Moyes returned to the Blues at the halfway point of last season, they were just one point a above the drop zone with 17 points from their 19 matches.

That was less than 50% of their total in 2022/23 when the club avoided a first relegation in 72 years by a single goal on the last day despite posting the lowest equivalent points total in their history.

However, the 62-year-old, who steered Everton to nine top-eight finishes in his first spell at Goodison Park, including the club’s highest-ever Premier League position of fourth in 2004/05, currently has the Blues in eighth ahead of today’s clash at seventh-placed Brentford.

It's a big game with both clubs level on points and both just three points adrift of the final Champions League qualification spot.

Given the job that he’s done, there has been speculation over a new deal for Moyes, whose current contract expires at the end of next season.

Asked if he’d be up for that, he said: “Absolutely. I love it here.

“There’s no problem here, but there’s no problem if we don’t. With the age I’m at, I’ll be in for a period then we’ll see where it goes.

“I use the words that I’ll try not to overstay my welcome and do what I think is best for Everton.

“I’m quite comfortable. I’m not desperately needing anything at the moment and I’m not desperately needing to be in talks or having anything to discuss.

“I’m fine. I think the focus from me is how we can get on in the next four or five weeks and we’ll see what happens after that.”
