Coventry City today sit on the brink of promotion back to the Premier League after an absence of 25 long years.
The Sky Blues currently lead the Championship table with 84 points on the board. They now need to reach a total of 88 points to officially seal a return to top flight football, with Middlesbrough only able to reach a maximum of 87 heading into the weekend schedule.
Millwall's failure to beat West Brom at The Hawthorn's last night (Fri) means all eyes are now on Boro's 3pm match against Portsmouth, should City secure victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the 12.30pm kick-off at the CBS Arena.
Frank Lampard's men need just four more points to secure automatic promotion. Although with their vastly superior goal difference of +42, it’s three points, effectively, if not mathematically, to secure going up.
Therefore, a win at home against bottom side Wednesday this lunchtime would confirm a top-two finish if Middlesbrough drop points. If not, then four points from games against Wednesday and Blackburn, at Ewood Park on Friday, would secure promotion.
If Coventry don’t secure promotion against either Wednesday or Blackburn, they will still have other chances to pick up the points they need. They host Portsmouth on Tuesday, 21 April, with a home clash against Wrexham following on Saturday, 26 April, with the season ending away at Watford on Saturday, 2 May.
The date of a possible promotion in that scenario could also depend on both Middlesbrough and Millwall's results over the last few weeks of the season.
