Frimpong says Liverpool may be about to lose the hardest player to face in training and it's not Salah

Jeremie Frimpong has surprisingly named Curtis Jones as the toughest player to face in Liverpool training, serving the Reds with a warning shot against selling the Scouser.

Jones looks likely to leave this summer having failed to agree new terms on a contract which is heading into its final year.

But according to Frimpong, the Liverpool academy graduate is surprisingly the most difficult player to face at the AXA Training Centre on a daily basis.

Wirtz needs a rest, but who on earth is going to play right-back?

It surely won't be Gomez or Frimpong 😬

Jones can come out of any situation with the ball – Frimpong

Though Jones has been an important player for Arne Slot, he has at times cut a frustrated figure as he fails to break into the regular starting XI.

11 Premier League starts this season tells its own story, and his lack of consistent appearances made him an unexpected choice for Frimpong when asked to name the toughest teammate to come up against by Men In Blazers.

ā€œMe, I would says Curtis,ā€ the Dutchman answered. ā€œCurtis is really good.

ā€œSituations where you shouldn’t get out of, he gets out of it. I don’t know how! No matter who he comes up against he will just end up coming out of it and looking good.ā€

Frimpong also gave a special mention to Netherlands national team colleague Ryan Gravenberch.

ā€œThis guy is like a spider, honestly, his legs are just everywhere!ā€ he smiled. ā€œYou think the ball is going to go out, he’s saved it, he’s caught it. The shoulder drop, his driving, his defending, he’s scoring goals this season.ā€

Analysis: Jones must show his quality when it matters

The notion of Jones as a very good footballer has never really been in question. He clearly has bags of talent and loves having the ball at his feet.

As a result, maybe it should not be such a surprise to hear Frimpong speak so highly of him. Jones is arguably a pure footballer in the sense that he has so much technical ability, so give him time and space in training and he’s going to show it.

The problems arrive when that form cannot be translated to matchday situations.

Jones has been a good player for Liverpool across more than 200 appearances, but with glowing references like Frimpong has just provided, he should have hit greater heights.

There remains a feeling that a parting of the ways might be the best thing this summer, with Jones able to go and start week-on-week elsewhere.

In the meantime, Liverpool fans could really do with the 25-year-old showing some of this magic when he gets his chances during matches.
