'Full marks for Summerville': Sky pundit saw something very encouraging from West Ham winger

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of West Ham United’s 4-0 beating of Wolves on Friday night was that Crysencio Summerville neither provided a goal nor provided an assist.

If you felt the inexplicable urge to stick a fiver on Konstantinos Mavropanos bagging a brace, then you will be a very rich Hammers fan today, both in spirit and pocket.

Reminiscent perhaps of Neil Warnock when, inspired by his wife Sharon, he chucked full-back Danny Butterfield up top on the day of the most unexpected of Crystal Palace hat-tricks.

Taty and Dinos with braces, but did anyone else stand out more?

Mavropanos and Taty Castellanos scored twice apiece as West Ham United won a Premier League home match 4-0 for the first time in three years. Nuno didn’t even need the final third qualities of Crysencio Summerville, although his role in West Ham’s game-breaking second goal did owe much to the Dutchman’s commendable work ethic.

Alan Smith praises Crysencio Summerville on West Ham United return

Summerville was the first to react as he nicked in ahead of Mateus Mane around the halfway line. His interception sparked the transition from which the home side doubled their lead and ended the match as a contest.

“[Wolves] weren’t sharp in midfield. Full marks for Summerville, getting in there quickly, dispossessing,” former Arsenal striker Alan Smith said in his co-commentary role for Sky Sports.

“Summerville acted really quickly.”

Playing full throttle for 78 minutes, that calf injury which kept him out of action for four weeks is firmly in the rearview mirror.

Castellanos took over following Summerville’s interception. His pass into strike partner Pablo Felipe was slightly behind the 22-year-old. But, while Pablo has spent much of his West Ham career lumbering around like Bambi on rollerblades three shots deep, he showcased hitherto-unseen levels of elegance and grace when flicking the ball back into Castellanos’ path.

Jose Sa, arguably questionable for both of the Argentine’s quickfire efforts, could not get out in time.

“It’s a lovely flick from Pablo,” added Smith, the £18 million man registering his first ‘goal contribution’ at the eleventh attempt and one week after that missed penalty against Leeds in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

As for Summerville, the laces on those shooting boots needed tightening. Perhaps slightly rusty on his first league outing since scoring the winner away to Fulham on March 3rd, he fired over when well-placed early on and then failed to connect with an ambitious lob while things were still in the balance.

Still, even on a night when his ruthless streak deserted him, Summerville contributed heavily to another invaluable win.
