Newcastle United and Porto transfer business on agenda – Magpies official sent

Newcastle United

Newcastle United’s recruitment team did not need much convincing in Porto – but they may have left with a couple of names reinforced rather than discovered.

The 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest was far from a quiet game. Porto pushed, created chances and dictated long spells. For a side like Newcastle, who value intensity and physical output as much as technical quality, it was a useful environment to assess players.

Portuguese newspapersO Jogo and A Bola both note the presence of scouts from across Europe, including Newcastle United. And while several players impressed, two in particular felt like familiar checkpoints rather than new revelations.

Transfer targets deliver for Newcastle United

William Gomes is not a new name for Newcastle United. The club tracked him during his time in São Paulo’s academy, when he was already building a reputation as a direct and productive winger.

Now at Porto, the 20-year-old is turning that promise into output. He scored the opener here with a well-timed run to the far post and stayed dangerous throughout.

His numbers underline the trend. Three shots, two successful dribbles and six duels won on the night. More broadly, he now has four goals in his last five matches and 13 for the season, making him Porto’s second top scorer.

Gabri Veiga also falls into the category of “well known”.Newcastle United were linked with him last summer, when he was playing for Al-Ahli, and his performance here showed why that interest existed.

The 23-year-old was at the centre of everything Porto did going forward. He assisted the goal, completed 26 of 29 passes and created two clear chances. More than that, he dictated tempo. When Porto accelerated, it usually started with him.

Fofana fits the Newcastle United mould

If Gomes and Veiga bring flair, Seko Fofana offers something closer to Newcastle’s identity. A true Cheick Tiote-esque player.

The 30-year-old midfielder covered ground, drove forward with the ball and contributed defensively across the pitch. He recorded multiple recoveries, interceptions and duels won, while also leading transitions.

There is a familiarity in that profile. Newcastle have built much of their recent success on players who can do a bit of everything, and Fofana fits that description cleanly.

Supporting cast and opposition notes

Pepê added energy off the bench and helped Porto maintain pressure late in the game. Young attacker Deniz Gül also showed flashes as a more physical forward option, even if his influence faded with the result.

For Nottingham Forest, Stefan Ortega was key to keeping the score level. The Manchester City loanee made several important saves, ensuring Porto’s dominance did not translate into a lead.

What this means for Newcastle

This was not about uncovering hidden gems. It was about confirming impressions.

William Gomes continues to evolve into a winger with real output. Gabri Veiga remains a midfielder capable of controlling games. Seko Fofana offers the kind of all-action presence Newcastle tend to value.

In that sense, the trip to Porto served its purpose. Not everything needs to surprise – sometimes it just needs to convince.
