Wolves Ratings: A Dismal Second Half Leaves More Questions Than Answers
Wolves were beaten 4-0 by West Ham after a poor second half. Here are John Taras" player ratings, plus thoughts on Rob Edwards’ selection and substitutions.
After that dismal second-half performance, I will try to be constructive.
Jose Sa 3
Made one good save low down to his left, but was easily beaten by the four goals. Distribution was absent because everything went short. Don’t expect to see him in the Championship.
Jackson Tchatchoua 3
Made runs down the right wing, but his crossing was poor and did not lead to any chances. He won’t be suitable for the Championship.
Hugo Bueno 5
Tried his best for 90 minutes to get Wolves forward. Put in several searching crosses, but nobody was on the end of them. Perhaps Wolves’ best player tonight. Definitely need to keep him for the Championship.
Yerson Mosquera 3
A poor performance from him tonight. Managed to get himself booked after winning a free kick in the first half. Repeatedly petulant, with too many histrionics. Whether to keep or sell for next year is still undecided.
Santi Bueno 3
Like Mosquera, he ran ragged in the second half and it was not his usual dominant performance. But he is a must for next season to build around.
Ladislav Krejci 3
He struggled with Bowen tonight and was caught out at the back post for the fourth goal. He did not dominate like S. Bueno, and collectively all three centre backs were exposed in the second-half capitulation.
Andre 3
He was outfought in midfield by West Ham tonight. Unable to create anything going forward and overwhelmed in the second half. Not sure where he will be next season.
Joao Gomes 4
He gets a four for effort, but not one of his better performances. He was easily robbed from our own kick-off, allowing the third goal seconds after the second goal went in. He looked to have been kicked, but the referee did not give it. He did not create anything going forward and was outfought by West Ham, which is not often reported. Don’t expect him to play in the Championship.
Angel Gomes 3
Apart from one free kick that hit the post, his contribution was lightweight. He gave the ball away too many times. He won’t be the answer for Wolves next season.
Jean Ricner Bellegarde 3
Booked harshly by the referee when others escaped a yellow card. He was caught in possession too many times and did not create anything going forward. Not one of his better games, but I expect Wolves will look to keep him next season.
Adam Armstrong 3
The game just passed him by. He could have scored from a Krejci flick-on, but his header was easily saved by the keeper. His reaction showed he knew he should have done better. He was starved of service in his defence. Bought with the Championship in mind.
Substitutes:
Mane and R. Gomes did not change anything, 3.
Mane was caught in possession for the third goal.
Arokodare, Hwang and Edozie were not on long enough to register a rating.
Rob Edwards 3
A disappointing performance in a crucial game from Edwards. I feel he should have played Arokodare instead of, or as well as, Armstrong. Wolves lacked an aerial threat against the big West Ham defence. Mane would have been more of a threat than A. Gomes, who was lightweight today. I think, being one down at half-time, Arokodare and Mane should have come on straight away for the second half.
