Newcastle United
Newcastle United have moved quickly to secure Johan Martínez, continuing a clear strategy of targeting elite South American prospects before their value explodes.
The 16-year-old winger arrives from Independiente del Valle, a club that has become one of the most reliable talent factories in the region.
That background alone places expectations on Martínez. Players developed in IDV’s youth academy are rarely ordinary. Names like Moisés Caicedo and Piero Hincapié have already made the jump to European football with impact. Newcastle are effectively buying into that same pathway again.
At the same time, Martínez’s profile has grown rapidly over the past year. His performances at youth level, combined with strong physical and technical traits, have pushed him onto the radar of several European clubs. The move to St James’ Park reflects both his current level and his long-term ceiling, as we have previously detailed.
However, as his club future becomes clearer, a separate storyline has started to develop around his international career.
Newcastle United arrival has dual nationality
Johan Martínez was born in Ecuador, which makes him eligible to represent Ecuador’s national team. That is the country he is currently playing for at youth level.
Still, his situation is not that straightforward. His father is Colombian, which opens the door for him to represent Colombia national team.
That dual nationality has already triggered movement from both sides. Colombia made a strong push in 2025, identifying Martínez as a priority target for their youth teams. At that stage, Ecuador were not heavily relying on him, and they had also failed to qualify for the U17 World Cup.
As a result, Martínez moved closer to switching allegiances. As told by Deportes RCN, he began the process of obtaining a Colombian passport and indicated a willingness to represent Colombia internationally.
Change of direction before key tournament
Despite that momentum, the situation changed when official decisions had to be made.
Martínez received a formal call-up from Colombia for the U17 World Cup. Around the same time, Ecuador offered him the chance to train with the senior national team as a sparring player. The report confirmed he chose the latter.
That decision marked a turning point. Martínez declined Colombia’s invitation and instead aligned himself with Ecuador’s setup. He is now representing Ecuador in the South American U17 Championship.
The timing has added weight to the situation. His move to Newcastle United has increased his exposure, and both national teams had clear reasons to secure his commitment early.
What this means for Newcastle United
Johan Martínez’s international future is not fully locked in yet, since youth appearances do not permanently tie him to one country.
Even so, his current trajectory points towards Ecuador. Newcastle United will likely keep a close eye on this, as international involvement can shape development, experience and market value.
For now, it is another layer in a fast-moving career. Martínez is preparing for a future in the Premier League while also navigating a decision that could define his international identity.
For Newcastle, the focus remains on development. They have secured one of South America’s most promising young wingers. The rest of his story, both at club and international level, is still being written.
