Leeds United fans watched on with worry as West Ham spanked Wolves 4-0 at the London Stadium on Friday night, to move out of the relegation zone.
Leeds have to wait until Monday to get back in Premier League action after an FA Cup triumph over relegation rivals West Ham.
Coinciding with our toughest remaining game, the Irons had their most favourable game remaining as they hosted bottom-placed Wolves at home on Friday night.
West Ham apply pressure to Leeds United, Spurs and Nottingham Forest with 4-0 Wolves drubbing
All eyes on Friday were on whether Rob Edwards’ Wolves could continue spoiling the party for clubs who still had something to play for.
However, they were soundly beaten as their hapless defence was cut open by braces from centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos and striker Taty Castellanos.
A 4-0 victory moved the Irons out of the bottom three with an emphatic reaction to FA Cup heartbreak at our hands. For Leeds, it leaves us still holding a three-point cushion ahead of our game. Although, Spurs and Nottingham Forest both play on Sunday against Sunderland and Aston Villa respectively.
That West Ham win moves the Irons to 32 points, one behind Leeds and outside of the drop zone. Importantly, they’ve put Spurs into the bottom three.
Silver lining for Leeds United: Wolves dealt suspension blow ahead of Elland Road clash next week
While fans are understandably fretting over West Ham getting a massive home win to move out of the bottom three, it’s not all doom and gloom for United.
It’s worth noting we have to play the same turgid Wolves side next Saturday at home. If they turn up in the same manner as they did on Friday, Leeds should claim three points.
Additionally, Wolves come to West Yorkshire next weekend without starting centre-back Yerson Mosquera. The 25-year-old was cautioned last night and as a result, picked up his 10th booking of the season, and was handed a two-match ban.
He now misses crucial basement scraps against Leeds at Elland Road, and against Spurs at Molineux.
Two other Wolves players are also on nine cards, and therefore one away from a two-game ban. Brazilian midfield duo Andre and Joao Gomes avoided bookings last night, and should be available against Leeds.
