Dean Ashton issues verdict on Crysencio Summerville after return from injury for West Ham

Crysencio Summerville has made a welcome return for West Ham United – although Dean Ashton isn’t fully convinced yet.

After missing West Ham United’s last three games due to a calf injury, Summerville made his return on Friday night.

The Dutchman lasted around 78 minutes of West Ham’s 4-0 win over Wolves as the Irons pulled themselves out of the relegation zone with a huge win.

Having the forward back available is clearly a huge boost, but former Irons star Ashton has refused to get carried away.

Ashton suggests that Summerville might not be fully up to speed yet

There was a moment when Summerville attempted to chip goalkeeper Jose Sa from his own half, rather than take a few extra touches and to try and fashion a much better chance closer to goal.

It was certainly an odd decision from a player previously in such good form, but some rustiness is to be expected regardless of his fitness levels.

Speaking on Premier League Productions on Stan Sport, fellow pundit Clinton Morrison said: “He’s just coming back from injury. I’m not going to be too critical of him even though he’s very sharp. But once he’s here, no one should be able to catch Summerville.”

Ashton then added: “Yeah, I don’t know if he’s trusting his body maybe at that point with that injury that he he’d had.”

Summerville stats for West Ham against Wolves

Thankfully, West Ham did not need Summerville to bail them out against Wolves.

As far as first team returns during an intense relegation battle go, this was a fairly gentle landing for the 24-year-old.

It certainly wasn’t his finest showing, but West Ham will hope that this was just a tune up for their star player in recent weeks.

Summerville had 34 touches against Wolves, four of which came in their penalty box, and he completed one of his two attempted dribbles.

The forward created one chance and missed two big chances himself.

The most important thing is that Summerville is building himself back up to full speed all while West Ham are winning games.

This wasn’t a vintage display but it was brilliant to see him back on the pitch, and hopefully this is just the start for him ahead of a huge six games for everyone here in east London.
