Scottish Premiership pair to compete for EPL midfielder as Sunderland make transfer decision on …

Scottish Premiership clubs join chase for youngster.

Two Scottish Premiership clubs are ready to discuss a deal to sign Sunderland’s Harrison Jones after the midfielder was told he could leave the Stadium of Light in the summer.

The Academy of Light graduate will see his current deal expire on Wearside in the summer and the club have informed him that they will not be taking up the option to extend his deal in the summer, making him available on a Bosman free transfer, as per a report from the Sunderland Echo.

Making his debut as a substitute in Sunderland’s 2-0 defeat to Preston North End in the Carabao Cup in August 2024, the young midfielder has made seven first-team appearances for Regis Le Bris’ side and has been included on the bench in the English Premier League 12 times this season, though he is yet to make an appearance in the top flight.

In fact, his only senior minutes this season came during a penalty shootout defeat to Huddersfield Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup, where he played the entire 90 minutes of the clash against the EFL League One side. He’s been in strong form for the club’s Academy sides, though, scoring five goals and assisting a further two in the Premier League 2 from just nine starts this season.

Jones, who is also capable of playing at left-back, was expected to move out on loan during the January transfer window, but saw a move scuppered when he picked up an injury against Borussia Dortmund in a Premier League International Cup match. Returning to fitness last month, he captained the Black Cats’ Under-21 side in a 2-1 defeat to Derby County on Monday and scored a free-kick with several scouts said to be in attendance.

His summer availability has also alerted a number of clubs in the English Football League, with five clubs said to be ready to launch a move when the window reopens, although the two unnamed clubs in the Scottish Premiership are reported to have already indicated to the player they would discuss a deal to bring him over the border.
