Repubblica: Valdepeñas and Modric renewal – Milan keep Real Madrid axis alive

AC Milan are working on planning for next season, both on the renewals front and also the new signings that will arrive.

Today’s Repubblica (via MilanNews) has a headline which reads: ‘Valdepeñas idea for the Milan of the future’. While everyone at Milanello is only thinking about the present and tonight’s match against Udinese, at Casa Milan the planning phase is already underway.

Among the targets being explored is 19-year-old Real Madrid defender Victor Valdepenas. Their interest in the young Spaniard – who can play both as a centre-back and left-back – is strong, and relations between the two clubs are good.

The only question mark is the clause(s) that Los Blancos would impose if they were to sell him. In other words, they might insist on a Brahim Diaz-style arrangement, whereby they reserve the right to bring him back to the Spanish capital with a buy-back.

Victor with Luka?

Meanwhile, there’s growing optimism at Milan regarding the possibility that Luka Modric will stay for another year. A final decision hasn’t been made yet, but confidence is increasing day by day within the Rossoneri ranks.

Everyone wants him to stay. Despite turning 40 last September, Modrić continues to be a key player: he’s the most frequently used midfielder, with 30 appearances in 31 league games, 29 of which as a starter, for a total of 2,546 minutes.

The Croatian’s contract expires at the end of June, but there is an option to extend it until the summer of 2027. It is officially a club option, though the player will have the final say, potentially before the World Cup.
