Coventry City all but promoted after Middlesbrough fall short

Coventry City are all but offically promoted back to the Premier League after Middlesbrough lost at home to Portsmouth this afternoon.

The Sky Blues played out a frustrating goalless draw against relegated bottom club Sheffield Wednesday at the CBS Arena in one of the Championship’s lunchtime games, having seen Millwall draw at West Brom on Friday night.

The fact that the Lions dropped points means that they now have 73 in third place while Boro's 1-0 Riverside defeat leaves them on 72 in fourth spot. Millwall can only get a maximum of 85 from their last four matches, while Boro can only get 84.

City’s point against the Owls took them to 85, and with a plus 42 goal difference - plus 22 over Boro and whopping plus 33 over Millwall - Frank Lampard’s men are virtually guaranteed a top two finish and, therefore, are heading to the Premier League.

One more point at Blackburn Rovers on Friday night would officially confirm the club’s promotion – a game in which over 7,000 of the Sky Blue Army are making the trip to Ewood Park.

Whether it’s confirmed home or away doesn’t matter to Lampard, who said: “I keep being asked whether it’s better when you do it at home, win it away or win it when you’re driving home on the M40 as another result happens,” he said.

“But I don’t care how we win it. In fact, my experience of winning the Premier League has been at Stamford Bridge and it’s been at Bolton away, and Bolton away was the best. So we’ll see.”
