Rio Ngumoha breaks record held by Raheem Sterling for over 13 years

Rio Ngumoha‘s opening goal against Fulham saw him break another long-held record, eclipsing Raheem Sterling’s Anfield achievement from October 2012.

Ngumoha bent an effort in at the far post to put Liverpool 1-0 up against Fulham on Saturday, making it two goals in his breakout campaign in Liverpool’s first team.

It was his first at Anfield and made him the youngest-ever player to score a home league goal for Liverpool at 17 years, 225 days old.

The previous record was set by Sterling (17 years, 317 days) after his winner against Reading in the Premier League in October 2012 – 13-and-a-half years ago.

Before that, Jimmy Melia (18 years, 46 days) held the record for almost six decades, having scored in a 5-2 win over Nottingham Forest in the old Second Division in December 1955.

Three legendary academy graduates make up the rest of the top five youngest Anfield goalscorers in the Premier League era:

“To start so young, the manager and all the players having belief in me, it’s great. I’ve just got to keep working hard, keep pushing on and just go again.”

Andy Robertson, who is at the other end of his career as he plays out his final games at Liverpool, joined Ngumoha for his interview, saying: “He was unbelievable.

“It just shows you sometimes don’t listen to the experienced players – I’m screaming at him to say that I’m coming on the overlap then he just goes and cuts inside!

“It was a great finish and great performance from him. He just keeps learning, keeps listening. He’s such a good kid.

“Him and Trey are a pleasure to work with, they just listen to all the lads and you can see them improving all the time.

“He’s got a big future ahead of him but the here and now is pretty good as well.”
