Ex-Brighton boss Gus Poyet gives his verdict on Fabian Hurzeler and his link to Bayer Leverkusen
Former Brighton manager Gus Poyet feels Bayer Leverkusen may not be the right club for Fabian Hurzeler at this stage of his career.
Hurzeler, 32, has mostly impressed during his time in the Premier League and this season he has Brighton in contention for European qualification. The Seagulls are ninth in the top flight and have won five of their last six fixtures.
Hurzeler was last week linked with a potential move to Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen. The German head coach dismissed the rumours and said he happy with the Seagulls and insisted it “would take a lot” to prise him away from the Amex Stadium.
“That is a personal one for Hurzeler,” said Poyet speaking with Sussex World via Gambling.com, the best place to find UK Online Casinos
“Now he could get approached by a number of clubs and maybe he feels Brighton is the best option for him.
“But if he gets approached by team close to his heart, he may feel that this is the one he has to take or it may not happen again.
Poyet added: “Is Leverkusen right for Hurzeler? I am not sure. I believe the Premier League is still bigger than Bundesliga, so why move when you’re already coaching in the best League in Europe?
“Sometimes you lose a coach when you sack them or sometimes they want to leave and at Brighton it’s no different.
“So it depends on how much he can improve Brighton this summer and what package he is being offered.
“But one day yes, he can manage a top side in Germany. Going back to how has he done at Brighton, he is doing a very good job.”
Hurzeler, when asked about his future prior to the 2-0 win at Burnley, said: “The main thing for me is how's the relationship with the players?
“How's the relationship with the team, with the staff, with the owners, and with the supporters?
“I feel really settled and I feel that the foundation is really strong and really good that we can build something.
“And of course we want to compete, the club is ambitious and wants to win something long term, but we need to earn this right
“We need to earn this right to compete with the other clubs on the highest level.”
