Manchester United target and Carrington graduate James Garner is competing for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
In the recent March international break, Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo were recalled to the England squad.
Both Manchester United stars will hope to make the final Three Lions squad for the World Cup, but Mainoo specifically will be competing against the likes of James Garner for a spot.
Garner has been linked with a United return, but a move to Old Trafford could become complicated and more expensive if he shines in the World Cup.

James Garner value could soar after World Cup
United showed interest in Garner over January, and the Everton midfielder could make a move in the upcoming summer window despite having just signed a new deal with the Toffees.
Garner was sold to Everton for £15 million, but his value has been soaring because of his form in the Premier League, and it could reach new levels if he impresses at the World Cup.
A strong World Cup campaign would not only inflate Garner’s value, but would also attract other bidders for the 25-year-old midfielder.

Considering Garner is a homegrown talent with years of Premier League experience, Everton are already in a strong negotiating position. A strong World Cup campaign would justify the Toffees charging as much as £65m-£70m for the Carrington graduate.

Man United have James Garner sell-on fee
Despite initial reports that United inserted a buyback clause for Garner, it has since been claimed that is not the case.
According to The Athletic, United don’t have a buyback option for Garner but there is a sell-on clause inserted in the deal.

United made a mistake selling Garner for such a small fee back in 2022, but the Red Devils could yet earn millions more from their academy product if he is sold this summer.
A sell-on clause usually provides a club with a flat percentage of a player’s sale, or a percentage of the profit earned by the selling club.
