Van Dijk calls for Liverpool ticket resolution

Virgil van Dijk believes a resolution in Liverpool’s ticket pricing row is ‘important’.

Supporters protested during Saturday’s win over Fulham against plans by owners Fenway Sports Group to implement three years of price rises at a rate of inflation.

Flags were withdrawn from The Kop as part of the demonstration, which also saw chants aimed at the American hierarchy and a banner opposing the proposals.

While Van Dijk admits the current stand-off reaches beyond his role as Reds’ captain, he hopes that a breakthrough can be reached between all parties.

He said: “I think the fans are the heart and soul of the club.

“If they feel like this then protest is their fair right. Hopefully they come to a solution with the club. These things are far above my position as captain of the club.

“But my opinion is that our fans are the club. They always have been – before my time and [will be] after my time.

“It’s important that these things get solved because it benefits no-one.”

Rio Ngumoha opened the scoring against the Cottagers to become Liverpool’s youngest ever home league goal scorer, taking the title off Raheem Sterling.

“He’s taken the record from Raheem which is very nice for him and should motivate and push him even more,” added Van Dijk.

“You shouldn’t take things like that for granted and he won’t. He has to keep going.

“He’s a humble kid who works hard and listens. He wants to improve constantly. He has big dreams.

“It’s down to him and the people around him to make sure that he stays like that. I’m not worried that anything will change on that front. “
