Liverpool’s goalscorers vs Fulham represent a passing of the baton moment
Liverpool ended a three-game winless run with a 2-0 win against Fulham in the Premier League at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
A much-needed morale booster before welcoming PSG on Tuesday, Rio Ngumoha and Mohamed Salah were on the scoresheet for the Reds.
That is significant, because in many ways, it offered an insight into what the future of Liverpool will look like without Mohamed Salah tearing up that left flank.
Yesterday’s result marked Rio Ngumoha’s first Anfield goal and Mohamed Salah’s 256th but on top of that, yesterday was the biggest age gap between two goalscorers in a single game in Liverpool’s Premier League history.
We all understand the brilliance of Mohamed Salah, but with the club legend set to depart Anfield this summer, many will be feeling that the future of the side is in safe hands with the emergence of rising star Rio Ngumoha.
He has been eased into the first-team set-up by Arne Slot this season and after impressing in the short cameos offered to him, he is starting to pick up starts.
Within those starts, he is picking up MOTM awards, showing just how special he is considering he’s only 17 years old.
His finish against Fulham was sublime, as his tidy footwork and powerful finish sent Liverpool on their way to a much-needed three points in their hunt for Champions League qualification next season.
“One of his strengths is dominating the one-v-one. We’ve seen this season that he gets more and more and more playing time. That’s what he deserves because every time he plays, he does really well.”
“The manager also stressed the importance of end product, especially in high-pressure matches. His influence in the game, like he did today and against Wolves. Today, he even scored a goal which is vital in football because goals matter a lot.”
Liverpool fans will be hoping to see Rio Ngumoha start against PSG in what is a crucial game for Liverpool’s season.
The youngster offers clear attacking threat that the Reds have lacked for large parts of the season.
