Brace yourself for wind, rain and memories of CMS at Turf Moor

Brace yourself for Mats

Mats Wieffer demonstrated finishing ability with both feet and a good knowledge of English footballing terminology as he sank Burnley.

The Dutchman spoke about the first “brace” of his career which, fittingly came at the scene of perhaps the finest double strike many of us have seen from an Albion player.

That was Craig Mackail-Smith’s pair in a 2-1 win early in the 2012-13 season, the first of which tends to be overlooked because of the scissors kick which followed.

Wieffer's double was less spectacular but very well taken.

Tough environment

Despite Burnley’s dismal home record, Turf Moor still feels like the proverbial hard place to go when you are actually in the environment.

A biting cold wind and torrential rain at times made life tricky and potentially treacherous and, with the stands tight to the pitch, the locals can be unwelcoming (in the right way).

One defeat in the last ten there is a good record for Albion. But five of those have been draws and they could not really afford a sixth.

Fine margins

Both offside Burnley goals seemed okay even when looking at replays. Neither felt like they infringed the ancient intention of offside. But technology proved they WERE offside – by about the same amount as Danny Welbeck was at Fulham.

These are the margins which go your way when you are on a roll.

Grandstand view

Fabian Hurzeler watched from among the Albion directors, including chairman Tony Bloom, due to his touchline ban.

But his vantage point looked like the worst of both worlds. Not in the thick of the action but, in the small main stand, not high enough to give him the bonus of a sweeping view of the pitch which he has mentioned as a silver lining when serving previous bans at the Amex and the new Riverside stand at Craven Cottage.

New song

“You’re going down with the Tottenham,” Albion fans taunted their Burnley counterparts in the end which is shared by home and away supporters.

They will have to change that wording at their next game! But at least, after draws at West Ham and Wolves, Albion have shown they can win away to the struggling teams.
