Roberto De Zerbi suffered a defeat on his debut in the Tottenham dugout as Spurs were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Nordi Mukiele’s goal was enough to split the sides on Wearside in a result that hauls the hosts into the top half in their unlikely European charge, while the visitors remain perilously in the relegation zone.
Spurs were plunged into trouble on Friday after West Ham’s 4-0 win over Wolves, and they could have moved up to as high as 15th in the Premier League table with a win here, but the defeat means that they remain the wrong side of the dreaded dotted line.
