Newcastle United threw away three points at Selhurst Park and lost further ground on the race for Europe.

Palace started the game strongly and had some good openings but could not beat Aaron Ramsdale who made a couple of good blocks to keep the home team at bay. And after weathering the early storm, Newcastle snatched the lead on 42 minutes after a great move involving Jacob Murphy and Sandro Tonali.

The Italian slipped in Lewis Miley down the right and he found William Osula in the box who tucked home. Newcastle got lucky after the break as Jefferson Lerma's header crashed off the bar following Yeremy Pino's free-kick.

Palace levelled the game up with 10 minutes left when Jean-Philippe Mateta headed home after Tyrick Mitchell's cross and some shambolic defending by Newcastle. The home side won a penalty after a daft giveaway from Sven Botman as he tugged back Jefferson Lerma. Mateta was allowed to roll home the winner from the spot.

Here's how the Magpies fared at Selhurst Park:

Aaron Ramsdale 7

Made two outstanding saves in the first half to deny Pino and Munoz.

Tino Livramento 4

Got through the first half, but his performance slipped backwards after the break. Ordered back to the bench for instructions as Palace threatened late on. All at sea for Palace equaliser.

Malick Thiaw 5

Was coping well, but performance plummeted when handed the stiffer challenge of dealing with Mateta. Booked for foul on Palace star then nowhere near the goalscorer as he nodded home.

Sven Botman 6

A decent display but then blotted copy book with a soft penalty for a shirt tug on Lerma.

Lewis Hall 7

Saved Newcastle a few times but can't do it all.

Joelinton 5

A stupid booking for a challenge he did not need to make. It will now prove costly with a two-game ban.

Sandro Tonali 6

Cut a dejected figure as he was taken off late on.

Lewis Miley 7

Made some good contributions including an assist but ran out of steam after long stint on sidelines with injury.

Anthony Gordon 4

Did not threaten enough. Moved back out wide and did not manage a single cross. Taken off before the end. Way off the standards we all know he can deliver.

Jacob Murphy 6

A hand in the goal but guilty of a couple of giveaways in the second half.

William Osula 8

Newcastle's best attacking player. A cool finish and forced Henderson into a save.
