Fabrizio Romano reports that speculation about Arne Slot’s future is futile at this stage, with Liverpool owners FSG only set to review his second season when the current campaign ends.
Fans and pundits have regularly criticised the Dutch coach’s performance at Anfield this season, while a large portion of the journalists reporting on Liverpool have stated that ‘mitigating’ factors will be considered in determining his future.
Slot has a contract with Liverpool, a three-year deal signed in 2024, that expires at the end of the 2026-27 season, giving him one more year before expiry.
Romano now reports that despite all the noise surrounding his position, Slot is not in immediate danger of losing his job, although that could still happen in the summer.
“What I can tell you, is a really important point about Arne Slot,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“My information remains the same, at the end of the season – not today, not next week, not in two weeks – at the end of the season, Liverpool, the management but also the owners, so the important people at Liverpool, will meet.
“They will decide about summer strategies, exits, and also the situation with the manager.”
Liverpool win over Fulham will give Slot some breathing room
Whether deserved or not, Slot has generated a little breathing room with his side’s 2-0 win over Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
The win places Liverpool more firmly inside the top five. The Premier League will once again have five automatic Champions League qualifying spots this season, which means a top-five finish will be enough for Liverpool to once again play in Europe’s elite tournament next season.
The idea that Slot finishing inside the top five should grant him another season makes little sense in my opinion. It begs several questions. What about his apparent tactical confusion? What about how most of the players have regressed? What about Liverpool’s defensive frailty? What about the weak mentality in his squad?
There are many serious questions that Slot will need to be asked by FSG at the end of the season, regardless of whether or not they finish inside the top five or defy the odds to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit to beat PSG in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final.
