Newcastle United player ratings from alarming defeat to Crystal Palace

A typically weak Newcastle United lost once again, this time to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.

Most alarmingly for Newcastle United fans, there was absolutely no reaction from the dismal defeat to Sunderland before the international break despite the extra time on the training pitch that Eddie Howe so desperately craved.

William Osula’s goal gave the Magpies a first-half lead before a late brace from Jean-Philippe Mateta condemned them to yet another defeat.

Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players in the 2-1 defeat at Selhurst Park…

Aaron Ramsdale – 7

Brilliant instinctive save in the first half to keep the scores level. Beaten twice in the second half, however, and didn’t always look comfortable when claiming crosses.

Wasn’t Ramsdale‘s fault but he didn’t really stand out.

Tino Livramento – 4

Brought the usual amount of energy and thrust at times off the ball but Livramento was sloppy on it and was all at sea for Palace’s first goal.

Looks nothing like the player who has thrilled supporters over the years. Poor performances are becoming a trend.

Is this really the player we lauded as one of the best in Europe?! 😔

Malick Thiaw – 5

Largely did well with Jorgen Strand Larsen but was given the runaround by Mateta. Thiaw‘s form has dropped off considerably.

Sven Botman – 5

Botman wasn’t awful, but that’s the least one should expect. He conceded the late penalty and while the decision was soft, the fact he was tugging Mateta’s shirt made the referee’s decision up for him.

Lewis Hall – 7

Energetic and as good an outlet as ever. Some fine defensive work at times too.

Hall is one of few players who doesn’t ever really let Newcastle down.

Sandro Tonali – 6

Average throughout. Tonali no longer takes games by the scruff of his neck. Perhaps harsh to blame him alone but Newcastle fans are right to expect more.

Lewis Miley – 6

Great to have him back. Got the assist for Osula’s goal with a good cross after a lovely team move. Miley did tire as is to be expected after so long out.

If you had to put a percentage on it….

Joelinton – 5

This is looking like a season too far for Joelinton. Even after an extended break, he struggled to have any impact at all.

Jacob Murphy – 4

Wasted a good few chances late in the first half by taking the wrong decision and gave the ball away far too often.

Harsh to say but Newcastle really need an upgrade on Murphy and Anthony Elanga hasn’t been one.

William Osula – 6

A willing runner and did very well to sort his feet out so quickly for the goal. To an extent, Osula repaid Howe’s faith.

Anthony Gordon – 4

Made almost no impact whatsoever. Gordon just doesn’t do it often enough to be considered a big player.

Harvey Barnes – 6

Anthony Elanga – N/A
