Andy Robertson reveals there was no new Liverpool contract “on the table”

Departing Liverpool legend Andy Robertson has revealed that the club didn’t offer him a contract extension to stay at the club.

Robertson will leave the Reds at the end of the season, following a legendary nine-year stay.

In quotes provided by The Athletic, the 32-year-old discussed his exit, admitting Liverpool didn’t have a contract offer “on the table” for him.

“It means I don’t need to lie to everyone, so it’s a weight off my shoulders,” Robertson said.

“It’s not like I’ve knocked back a contract or anything, there was no contract on the table. It was a conversation we all had.

“It was a conversation of, ‘Okay, this is what I want to do, I want to play and I believe I’ve still got the ability to play’.

“I think I have showed that this season.”

Earlier this week, Robertson sent a touching message to the Liverpool supporters, ahead of leaving as a true Reds icon.

“It’s never easy leaving a club like Liverpool, it has been a huge part of mine and my family’s life for the last nine years,” he said.

“But for me, players move on, other people move on – the thing that stays the same is the club and obviously the fans.”

“I’ve had an amazing nine years here. Look, I think it has been well-documented, especially over the last year or so, I’ve had opportunities to leave and I’ve not taken them because of how difficult it is to leave this club.

“And I wouldn’t change that for the world.

“But I know football moves on, I know teams move on and I think now is the time for me to move on and go wherever my next move is and wherever my career takes me.

“I’ll always look back on amazing memories at this football club, I’ve put my heart and soul into the club for nine years and I’ve not got many regrets. I’ve grown as a man and as a person.

“This club will always mean the world to me, the fans will mean the world to me. It has been a hell of a journey.”

Did Andy Robertson warrant a new deal at Liverpool?

Seeing Robertson and Mohamed Salah leave Liverpool in the same summer will not only be emotional, but also a blow in terms of the leadership lost in the dressing room.

Robertson isn’t the force he was at his best, but there is an argument to say that offering him a short-term deal would have made sense for another season or two.

That said, the Scot may have wanted a longer-term contract anyway, so this summer may be the natural time to part ways.

Robertson reportedly has a verbal agreement in place with Tottenham, should they avoid the drop from the Premier League, but their 1-0 defeat at Sunderland leaves them in the relegation zone.

Whoever ends up signing the Scot will be getting a born winner with enduring quality, and the hope is that he still has a few great moments left in a Liverpool shirt.

Replacing him is going to be an almighty ask – hopefully, Milos Kerkez matures into the perfect successor over time.
