Women's round-up: Wolves take title race to final day

A round-up of women’s football.

Wolves will take the title race to the final day after a comeback win at Stoke.

The visitors made a strong start and Chloe Williams tested Harriet Grimshaw early on with a good effort.

But it was the hosts that opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Evie Priestley’s deflected strike.

Wolves came close to an equaliser through Racheal Quigley and Louanne Worsey, before eventually finding it through Georgia Marshall.

Dan McNamara’s side continued to push after the break and they took the lead in the 66th minute when Charlotte Greengrass finished into the bottom corner.

Williams’ pass set up Greengrass for her second and Wolves’ third to round off the win.

Wolves sit one point behind National League Northern Premier Division leaders Burnley with one game to go.

If they fail to win the league, they will enter into a play-off to achieve promotion.

McNamara said: “We didn’t start brightly and we allowed Stoke to get on top of us.

“They did it really well and deserved to go ahead. We altered something tactically and got a grip of the game and really imposed ourselves.

“We did the basics excellently, we were rarely troubled in the second half and we were clinical at the other end.

“I’m really pleased overall. This group doesn’t die, they never have, and once again we’ve taken a massive step forward in taking this league title to the final game of the season.

“Against all the odds again, we’re probably going to exceed a points tally that’s never not won the league before.

“We have to take stock at what the girls have done, they’re phenomenal and it’s a fantastic result.”

Elsewhere in the league, Albion lost 2-0 at home to Derby, while Sporting Khalsa were beaten 2-1 by Middlesbrough.

In the National League Division One Midlands, the relegation battle between Kidderminster Harriers and Stourbridge will go to the final day.

Both sides were comfortably beaten, with Harriers losing 5-0 at home to Peterborough United and Stourbridge losing 3-1 at home to Boldmere St Michaels.

Just three points separate the two teams, with Stourbridge currently occupying the last relegation spot.

On the final day in two weeks’ time, Harriers travel to fellow strugglers Sutton Coldfield Town, while Stourbridge are away to Peterborough and need to win with a 14-goal swing in their favour alongside a Harriers loss to stay up.

In the West Midlands League Premier Division, league leaders Lye Town won 6-1 at Burton Albion.

A hat-trick from Natasha Baptiste, a brace from Britanee Lote and a finish from Chloe Whyley secured the three points.

Hednesford Town tasted defeat however, losing 3-0 at Shrewsbury Town.

In the West Midlands League Division One North, Walsall kept the pressure on league leaders Lichfield City with a 4-1 win at home to Rugby Town.

They now sit five points behind them and with a game in hand, ahead of the final day of the season coming up.

Chasetown were beaten at AFC Telford United, losing 3-1.
