Former Crystal Palace man makes 'very disappointed' claim as Newcastle United fall to another…

Newcastle United suffered a 2-1 defeat at Premier League rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies went into the game on the back of a three-week break in the aftermath of their second-half capitulation against the Black Cats - but they clearly hadn’t learnt the lessons of that loss at St James Park. The Magpies edged themselves in front during a first-half low on quality and high on poor decision-making as Will Osula converted from close range after he got on the end of a neat cross from the returning Lewis Miley.

That lead remained in place until the final ten minutes as Eagles boss Oliver Glasner reaped the rewards of attack-minded substitutes with France international Jean-Philippe Mateta turning the game on its head. The powerful striker punished the Magpies defence when he forced the ball beyond Sven Botman on the line after good attacking play from Tyrick Mitchell before doubling his tally from the penalty spot after the Dutch defender has been penalised for a pull on Eagles midfielder Jefferson Lerma.

For all of the talk of showing a reaction from their derby loss, the Magpies failed to give supporters much to cheer and thoughts of a late push into the European places have been quelled by their loss at Selhurst Park. More pressingly, the reverse now means United have lost 25 points from winning positions throughout the Premier League season and will only increase the pressure on manager Eddie Howe. Former Brighton and Hove Albion and Palace striker believes Newcastle’s defeat against his old club and their inability to respond to their derby loss will have left everyone connected with the Magpies ‘very, very disappointed’.

Speaking as part of the Sky Sports’ commentary team, the said: “I think this one will hurt a lot. They wanted a reaction from their players and they did just about enough to go in front and led for such a long period. They couldn’t make that advantage count and to get beaten in this manner, they’ll be very, very disappointed.”
