Big club opens talks with £20.8m/year Liverpool star - he's open to offers

Turkish giants Galatasaray have reportedly opened talks over a potential move for Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, in what could become one of the most eye-catching transfer stories of the summer.

According to Turkish outlet Fotomac, discussions have been initiated as Galatasaray explore the possibility of bringing the Dutch defender to Istanbul as part of an ambitious recruitment drive.

The report claims Galatasaray are actively looking to strengthen their squad with high-profile additions and see van Dijk as a statement signing. Club officials are believed to have opened dialogue as they assess whether a deal could be structured, with the aim of adding experience and leadership to their defensive line.

The Fotomac report reads: “Galatasaray has initiated negotiations for the transfer of Liverpool’s renowned central defender, Virgil Van Dijk. Galatasaray are closely monitoring Dutch central defender Virgil Van Dijk, who is considering leaving Liverpool.

“The centre-back, whose contract expires in 2027, is open to offers. The 34-year-old star, who knows Galatasaray very well, expresses his admiration for RAMS Park at every opportunity. Galatasaray is expected to establish official contact with van Dijk in a short time.”

? Virgil van Dijk: “Mentally it has been a very tough season overall”.

“But we have a responsibility, not only to ourselves but especially to the fans and, if we want to make something out of this season, we have to try and do something special in the next three games”. pic.twitter.com/xtODCaDHV6

Will Liverpool really allow three veterans to leave in a single window?

Van Dijk, who currently earns £400,000 per week or £20.8m per year, is worth just €18m, according to Fotomac, but that is far less than Liverpool should be willing to accept.

That said, Mohamed Salah will be allowed to leave for free in the summer and so, perhaps, Liverpool will grant van Dijk the same freedom to negotiate his future without the financial shackles associated with talks over transfer fees.

While there is no suggestion that Liverpool are actively looking to sell Virgil van Dijk, speculation surrounding experienced players has grown as the club prepares for a longer-term rebuild. Salah and Andy Robertson are also set to leave.

Liverpool releasing Salah, van Dijk and Robertson in a single window after the disastrous nature of the 2025-26 season, would be a dangerously risky move.

Faith in Arne Slot, and by extension, the owners FSG, is frail and to see the three veterans released would be alarming.
