The next champions will be…

SO FAR, the only confirmed title winner in Europe is PSV Eindhoven, but in the next two weekends, some of the top leagues should be toasting their champions. The Premier League is not so far off, but next weekend (April 19), Manchester City host Arsenal in what could be something of a decider.

Arsenal’s 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Bournemouth, followed by City’s comfortable 3-0 win at Chelsea has changed the complexion of the title race. City are six points behind the Gunners, but they still have a game in hand, if they win at the Etihad, the pendulum will have swung their way. It would also the margin has been reduced to three points and of course, City have that extra match. At the moment, Arsenal are in control, but they need to keep calm and focused and block their ears to those claiming they are “bottling it”.

City are renowned for timing their run, but the fact is, they could end this season with a domestic treble after what has been an imperfect campaign. Incredible. They have completed one leg by beating Arsenal in the EFL Cup final and they should reach the FA Cup final to meet Chelsea or Leeds United. Nothing is guaranteed, but City may well go into the big game on April 19 more confident than Mikkel Arteta’s team. But if Arsenal can win, they can start engraving their name on the Premier trophy.

Bayern Munich are almost there in Germany. They have a 12-point lead over second-placed Borussia Dortmund whose maximum possible points is 79. Bayern have 76 points from 29 games, so they need four to exceed Dortmund’s total but in reality, their goal difference (currently +78) means one more win will make them champions. They are at home to Stuttgart on April 19.

Serie A should be won by Inter Milan, but it may take a little longer before they clinch another scudetto. They are seven points ahead of Napoli, but there are still seven games to go.

Bosnia & Herzegovina’s league should be won in the next two weeks. Borac Banja Luka probably need just one more victory to secure their fourth title. They have 68 points, while second placed Zrinjski Mostar, who are 12 points worse off, can only reach 71. Borac’s next game is against Velež, who are in fourth.  Borac’s goal difference is far superior to their rivals, which is certainly worth an extra point.

Red Star Belgrade are two or three wins away from their latest Serbian title. They have a 13-point advantage over Vojvodina at the top with seven games to go. The two teams meet on April 18 and if Red Star win, they will need just three points from six fixtures.
