Former West Ham player wins trophy as a manager after only 40 games

Former West Ham United midfielder Jack Wilshere would no doubt have enjoyed a fantastic weekend.

Wilshere, of course, is a boyhood West Ham United fan and played for the club between 2018 and 2020, even if his time here in east London was fairly difficult.

While the midfielder is most closely associated with Arsenal, his stance on Tottenham as an institution has been well-documented, so it would not be surprising if Wilshere particularly enjoyed their defeat too.

Away from all that, Wilshere has now won the first trophy of his managerial career after only 40 games and did it alongside a former West Ham academy star in the shape of Gideon Kodua.

Gideon Kodua and Jack Wilshere win first trophy since leaving West Ham

Indeed, Kodua joined Wilshere at Luton from West Ham in January, and the pair have already won a senior trophy together.

On Sunday, the Hatters beat Stockport County 3-1 at Wembley in the Vertu Trophy final.

Interestingly, Luton were actually knocked out of this competition by Swindon in the last 16 back in January, but were later reinstated after Ian Holloway’s side fielded two ineligible players.

The versatile Kodua started five of Luton’s seven games in this competition, registering one assist along the way.

In total, the 21-year-old has scored eight goals while laying on three assists in 32 games under Wilshere’s management.

Luton are not completely out of the play-off race in League One, either.

The club – who were playing Premier League football not all that long ago – are tenth in the table and only six points behind Stevenage, who currently occupy the last play-off spot.

It could yet be an even more remarkable season for Wilshere and Kodua.
