'It's a shame': West Ham forward hopes to seize chance after injury blow before World Cup

Valentin Castellanos enjoyed his best moment in a West Ham shirt to date against Wolves on Friday night.

The 27-year-old scored two goals within 100 seconds as the Hammers thrashed the visitors 4-0 at the London Stadium.

Castellanos now has four goals in 12 Premier League appearances – a decent return for the £25 million January signing.

After his brace on Friday, the Argentinian forward could even have a slim chance of going to the World Cup this summer.

Castellanos has played twice for Argentina’s senior national team, in friendlies against Chile and Paraguay in 2024.

The striker has not been called up in the last 18 months, but a recent injury blow could have opened the door for his return.

Strasbourg’s Joaquin Panichelli, who was expected to go to the World Cup, suffered a ruptured ACL weeks ago.

With a lack of alternatives available to Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni, Castellanos has a realistic chance of earning his place.

But West Ham’s number 11 knows he will need to continue scoring goals in the Premier League to make his dream come true.

“It’s a shame for Panichelli, but I have to keep working for West Ham, and if I do well, the national team will be a consequence of that.

“It’s tough, I have to put in the hard yards,” he told Capital Football UK after the Hammers’ victory over Wolves.

Even though he has one eye on the World Cup, Castellanos has made it clear that he remains focused on West Ham.

“It was an important double, and it helped us win, which is our aim each time,” he said. “This was a crucial game, and I am happy for that.

“We have to keep going like that because there are no easy games in the Premier League.

“There’s a lot of work still ahead of us. This week we will knuckle down to prepare our next game.”

If Castellanos can score another three or four goals in the Hammers’ six remaining league games, that should be enough to keep them up.
