Injury scuppered move to Sunderland – Player’s situation could heat up in the summer

Sunderland

Santiago Gimenez continues to struggle at AC Milan and this could give Sunderland an opportunity to sign him.

The Mexican joined the Rossoneri for around €35m in January 2025. While he did impress in the second half of last season, he’s struggled in this campaign.

He is yet to score a a Serie A goal and this cast doubts about his future in January.

SportWitness covered Sunderland’s interest in the striker after they had made an initial approach for his signing. Brentford were also in the mix before Gimenez was side-lined with injury.

There is confidence that if not for the 24-year-old’s injury, he would have joined Sunderland.

Il Giorno have speculated on the Mexico international’s future, which is likely to be away from the San Siro.

Black Cats could have signed player

The newspaper highlight how Milan’s attack has been failing this season.. They are no longer in the Serie A title race, with several exits likely in the summer.

Niclas Fullkrug is likely to return to West Ham, with Christopher Nkunku also proving to be a disappointment. with regards Gimenez, he too could move on at the end of the season.

The Milan attack has scored just five goals in 2026 and this is causing concern.. Robert Lewandowski is being monitored as a target, with the likes of Gimenez and Nkunku to make way for the Barcelona star.

Our take: Sunderland can rescue Gimenez

This season, Regis Le Bris’ side have seen Brian Brobbey make an impact in the Premier League. He was impressive against Tottenham at the weekend, helping Sunderland to a 1-0 victory.

Gimenez can offer something different for the Black Cats and a possible partnership with Brobbey.

Milan paid €35m for Gimenez and anything around €25m could see a deal being done with interest clubs.
