Leeds United head to Old Trafford with a reshuffled defence and a clear fitness gamble that could define the night, as Daniel Farke takes a risk or two against Manchester United.
Daniel Farke has already confirmed Leeds will be without Joe Rodon, Anton Stach and Dan James, and that alone tells the story. This is not a full-strength side walking into one of the toughest fixtures.
It gets more complicated when you look at the predicted XI. Jaka Bijol and Gabi Gudmundsson are both doubts, yet both are expected to start, which underlines just how stretched this squad currently is.

Joe Rodon’s absence leaves a real gap in Leeds United’s defence
Rodon is not just another injury. He has started 29 league games this season and played 2,547 minutes, which places him among Leeds’ most relied-upon players.
How would you start against Man United?
Farke confirmed the Wales international will miss out with an ankle injury, and that immediately forces a structural change at the back. This is not rotation. This is a key pillar removed from the defensive unit.
When a player with that level of involvement drops out, it affects organisation as much as quality. Leeds are not replacing like for like here, they are rebuilding the back line.

Jaka Bijol and Gabriel Gudmundsson highlight the risk
If Rodon’s absence creates the problem, the inclusion of Bijol and Gudmundsson adds the risk.
Bijol has missed training and is officially a doubt heading into the game. Gudmundsson is in a similar position after only recently returning. Yet both are expected to start in this system.
That is where the gamble becomes clear. Leeds are not selecting fully fit players across the defensive unit, they are selecting the best available options regardless of condition.
There is a difference between managing minutes and relying on players who have not had full preparation. Against Manchester United, that margin matters.
A reshuffled back line with no continuity, thrown together
The projected back three of Justin, Bijol and Struijk underlines the lack of continuity.

Rodon is out, Bijol is not fully fit, and Justin comes in as part of a reshuffle rather than a settled plan. This is a defensive unit built out of necessity.
It is not just the defence either. Stach’s absence in midfield removes a layer of protection in front of them, which increases the pressure on that back line even further.
Ampadu and Gruev are expected to anchor the midfield, but the balance is clearly different without Stach. That feeds directly into the defensive picture. Ao Tanaka, despite his goal at West Ham, sits out.
Leeds are effectively going into this game with changes in both the defensive line and the shield in front of it. That combination is difficult to manage against any opponent, let alone at Old Trafford.
The gamble is obvious, Farke has to risk his best defenders
This is the reality facing Leeds. Farke is not rotating for tactical reasons, he is adjusting because he has to.
Are you concerned if Leeds face a relegation scrap without Anton Stach?
Not one for the faint-hearted.
Rodon’s absence removes a constant. Bijol and Gudmundsson introduce uncertainty. The back line itself lacks continuity, and the midfield protection is also altered.
None of this guarantees a negative result, but it does define the challenge. Leeds are relying on a defensive unit that has not been able to prepare or settle in its strongest form.
At this level, that is a gamble. And at Old Trafford, it is one that will be tested immediately.
