Curtis Jones makes surprise pre-PSG training appearance after injury scare

Curtis Jones was present for Liverpool’s first team training on the eve of Paris Saint-Germain’s visit in the Champions League, with the midfielder dispelling injury concerns.

Jones marked a rare appearance in Arne Slot‘s starting lineup with a groin injury before halftime in the win over Fulham, which instantly cast doubt on his chances of featuring in midweek.

But he made a surprise appearance as an 18-man outfield group took to the outdoor pitches at the AXA Training Centre on Monday, as part of the final preparations for the French side’s visit.

Slot was, understandably, pessimistic over Jones’ chances of recovering due to the short turnaround between games, but he was involved as normal and will expect to be in the matchday squad.

Goalkeepers: Mamardashvili, Woodman, Misciur

Defenders: Van Dijk, Konate, Gomez, Frimpong, Kerkez, Robertson

Midfielders: Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Jones, Nyoni

Forwards: Salah, Wirtz, Isak, Gakpo, Ekitike, Chiesa, Ngumoha

There were, thankfully, no notable absentees beyond those still on the injury list, with Alexander Isak among those present after his first Anfield appearance since last December.

Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong were both involved after Slot had cast doubt over their ability to back up from the trip to Paris over the weekend, leaving him with another key right-back decision.

Dominik Szoboszlai will hope he is not part of the discussion, though he is almost certain to start and will join Slot for pre-match media duties on Monday afternoon (3.30pm UK time).

Liverpool have a two-goal deficit to overcome if they are to progress to the Champions League semi-final, a tall order against the European champions.

But Slot is hoping Anfield will help inspire a comeback, with another “special evening” needed, saying: “One thing is clear, is that on Tuesday we need our fans.

“There were fans in Paris, but we had a very hard time. Anfield has shown many times that it can lift the team to another level, and we need that again.

“Half an hour before the game the players need that support and need to feel it is going to be another special evening.”

PSG, meanwhile, have named their 22-man squad for the decider, with Bradley Barcola marking his comeback after an ankle injury.
