Exclusive Van den Berg: Brentford want the Champions League, it's fun proving wrong people that …

Capital Football have exclusively spoken to Brentford defender Sepp Van den Berg. Here is what he said.

One point. It could have been three. It probably feels like zero.

"No, let's be honest one point is better than zero. But I know what you mean. I think in the second-half we played very well and I think we should have scored the 3-1. But of course if you concede a late goal like this it feels very bad. It feels disappointing and we all are. If we win this game against Everton we make the gap even bigger between them and us. But like I said one point is better than zero."

Could Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's last-ditch equalizer have been avoided?

"I think so. Even the first goal for myself I think I could have done better. For the second goal I think we were a little too open at the end. We were 2-1 up and [should have kept it tighter]. We have to stay positive, there are six games to go. [At the time of speaking, 45 minutes after the game], we're still sixth."

Not bad at all for a side that was written off as relegation dead certs in August following the exits of Mister Frank, Wissa and Mbeumo.

"I said it many times before, the quality we had and STILL have... I knew it from pre-season already and was never worried. At this point people predicted different but for me and for us there was never any doubt. Sometimes it's fun to get those people wrong."

Will any form of European football do for a club that has never even dared dream of playing on the continent... or do you clearly target the Champions League?

"Of course, we have to aim high!"

So the Champions League?

"Of course, when you're in this position you have to keep going. Don't settle for anything less than the Champions League. Hopefully if results go well and if Villa win maybe the Europa League and Arsenal win the Champions League those places go down. We have to aim high and yeah we go for Champions League."
