Liverpool begin work on signing "England's Ousmane Dembele", it's bad news for Ngumoha - opinion

Some of the country's best young players of modern times have passed through the halls of the Liverpool academy.

From Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen, to Trent Alexander-Arnold and now Rio Ngumoha, the Reds' nifty winger is following in some fine foot steps.

Will he live up to the hype? Well, the early indication is that he will. The teenager became one of the youngest goal scorers in Premier League history when he rifled home a late winner against Newcastle last year.

Then, when he found the net on Saturday against Fulham, he became Anfield's youngest Premier League scorer. This is a mighty fine talent that Liverpool have on their hands here.

Still, they cannot stay still in their bid to improve the squad. Ngumoha's chance of regular action next season could be determined by what happens this summer.

Liverpool looking to sign new wide players

It has been a few weeks now since Mohamed Salah announced he would be departing Merseyside. The news of his departure still leaves a tinge of sadness.

Yet, football never stops. FSG are already on the hunt for the Egyptian's replacement with Michael Olise one possible but unlikely solution.

A more likely replacement is RB Leipzig's teenage winger, Yan Diomande. Football FanCast sources revealed in February that an agreement was close on personal terms, with the Ivorian keen to make a move to Anfield this summer.

Other names to have been linked include PSG's Bradley Barcola and Newcastle's Anthony Gordon, two players who favour the left-hand side of the attack.

Liverpool's most expensive signings of all time

Liverpool have splashed the cash in recent years, but who are their priciest additions?

Speaking of which, Liverpool could also look to bolster their overall depth. That's according to a report from TEAMtalk who note that the Reds are one of a number of teams looking to sign Leicester City wonderkid Jeremy Monga.

The 16-year-old has played regular football in the Championship this season and is on the radar of half the Premier League.

TEAMtalk claim that Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal are primed to make 'formal approaches' to sign the teenager.

However, they face competition from Brentford, Brighton, Tottenham, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Liverpool who have all begun work on a possible deal by registering 'interest' in the Foxes sensation.

Monga could be available for a small fee. At the age of 16, he has yet to sign a professional contract and thus, Leicester would only be due a compensation fee. However, should the youngster sign a pro deal once he turns 17, a bigger fee would be required to prise him away from the Midlands.

How Monga compares to Ngumoha

The impact that Ngumoha has made on a faltering Liverpool attack has been mightily impressive.

The 17-year-old has started two of the last three Premier League matches and got his reward for persistence this season by netting against Fulham on Saturday.

It rather begs the question: why haven't we seen more of the young Englishman this term? Despite Liverpool's woes, he only appeared for a combined 42 minutes in the league between 30th November and 11th February.

For Monga, it's been a very different tale. Like Ngumoha, he's experienced struggles this season but for a very different reason. Leicester are on the verge of relegation from the Championship but that has not stopped those from within the Premier League from casting their beady eyes in the direction of the winger.

Like Ngumoha, Monga is a left winger by trade and despite his tender age, he has already played 35 times for the Foxes, scoring just once and supplying two assists. Sure, those are not jaw-dropping numbers, but for a 16-year-old to have featured in 25 second-tier games this term is impressive enough. In that regard, he's certainly more experienced than Ngumoha.

But, what makes him so special? Well, he's got similar traits to the Liverpool teenager. He's quick and he's phenomenal with the ball at his feet, boasting a low centre of gravity that helps him manipulate the ball and evade opponents with ease.

Como scout Ben Mattinson has even lauded Monga as "England’s Ousmane Dembélé", hailing the forward as a "pacy and excellent dribbler" who is a "deadly finisher and both-footed ball striker."

Ngumoha has not long been on the scene but if Liverpool were to sign another top-drawer young wide player in the form of Monga, it would not bode well for his development.

That said, perhaps you could field them on either wing? Wouldn't that be a little bit exciting?
