Celtic move context shifts as Liverpool's Andy Robertson outlines plans before 2026 World Cup

With Andy Robertson officially confirming his legendary stint at Liverpool is coming to an end, the inevitable noise linking him with a dream move to Celtic has naturally kicked into high gear.

In a perhaps interesting side note to Celtic, the Scotland captain made his priority clear: ‘I want to play, so that was where the discussions came… I believe I’ve still got the ability to play.’

It seems as though Robertson, who is 32, would have perhaps preferred to stay at Anfield, but with his contract expiring in the summer and little chance of regular football, all parties have decided that he should move on.

“It’s not like I’ve knocked back a contract or anything; there was no contract on the table,” shared Robertson.

“It was a conversation we all had. It was a conversation of: ‘Okay, this is what I want to do, I want to play, and I believe I’ve still got the ability to play’. I think I have shown that this season.

That’s where the Celtic whispers come into it, but could the reason behind Robertson leaving Liverpool also be the reason why he won’t join the champions of Scotland this summer?

Andy Robertson outlines his plans ahead of Liverpool exit

Robertson, who revealed he is leaving alongside his legendary teammate Mohamed Salah, wants his domestic situation resolved ‘sooner rather than later’, so he isn’t heading to the 2026 World Cup with anything hanging over his head.

MORE CELTIC STORIES

Back in the winter, Robertson skippered Steve Clarke’s side to the World Cup for the first time since 1998, with Kieran Tierney netting a belting goal from distance against Denmark.

Tottenham Hotspur are the heavy favourites to secure Robertson’s services.

However, with Spurs currently heading towards a disastrous relegation from the Premier League, that potential transfer could be over before it even begins.

Could that open the door for a romantic Parkhead switch?

While seeing Robertson in the Hoops would be the ultimate dream for many fans and the player himself, the logistical reality is somewhat complicated.

Celtic already have Tierney flying down the left flank, and the returning hero is currently heading towards being crowned Celtic’s Player of the Year.

Trying to fit both players in the same starting X, not to mention balancing their wages, feels like an impossible headache for whoever will be Celtic’s next manager.

That’s why Robertson’s comments on wanting regular game time might spell the end of their chances of signing their former academy star.

“I want to play, so that was where the discussions came,” said Robertson, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“It’s not like I’ve knocked back a contract or anything; there was no contract on the table. It was a conversation we all had. It was a conversation of: ‘Okay, this is what I want to do, I want to play, and I believe I’ve still got the ability to play’. I think I have shown that this season.

“Look, you can’t be promised [starts] at this club – and that’s absolutely fine. It can’t be promised at any club. But it’s also maybe time for the story to end, and obviously, me and Mo (Salah) both made that decision this year.

“I will be looking to sort my future out sooner rather than later. I don’t want to be going to the World Cup with anything hanging over my head, so there will be conversations and things like that, but as of yet, there’s nothing.

“I know the contract stuff was kept to ourselves, and this will be kept to ourselves. Until a decision is made, we’ll see where things land for me and my family.”
