Ref who denied Albion and sent off De Zerbi to take charge of showdown at Spurs

The Nuneaton official will have the whistle for Roberto De Zerbi’s home debut as Tottenham boss against his old club.

Both De Zerbi and Albion will have vivid memories of what happened in the same match-up back in 2022-23.

Spurs won 2-1 after several contentious – or plain wrong – calls went against them.

Albion later received an apology from the PGMOL, who conceded they should have had a penalty for a foul on Kaoru Mitoma.

There was also a big spot-kick shout involving Lewis Dunk and two goals were disallowed for debatable handballs.

Writing for the BBC website at the time, ex-Tottenham striker Garth Crooks said: “Spurs won this fixture due to the referee's ineffectiveness. Almost every major decision Stuart Attwell made was wrong.”

Attwell sent off both De Zerbi and interim Spurs boss Cristian Stellini as feelings ran high.

Albion last saw him when they suffered their most recent away defeat, at Liverpool in the FA Cup.

He also refereed their cup defeat at Spurs in 2021-22.

Michael Salisbury was on VAR duty during that chaotic game in 2022-23 and was not assigned any Premier League game for the following weekend.

Jarred Gillett will be assisting from Stockley Park for this Saturday’s showdown.

The full officiating team for Spurs v Albion is as follows.

Referee: Stuart Attwell. Assistants: Constantine Hatzidakis, Mark Scholes. Fourth official: Farai Hallam. VAR: Jarred Gillett. Assistant VAR: Adam Nunn.
