Chelsea, we are told, are lining up alongside Liverpool AND Manchester United – and several as yet unnamed European ‘top sides’- in a bid to take West Ham’s exciting young midfielder to Stamford Bridge this summer. Mateus Fernandes is, no doubt, getting himself noticed by turning in game-changing performances week after week in a relegation-threatened side.
The Portuguese 21 year old has just found himself promoted to the senior International side just at the right moment with Portugal’s World Cup side announced in a matter of weeks.
Life is looking pretty rosy for Fernandes. As well it should for one of his potential ‘world class’ talent.
Linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer by the4thofficial.net, the report inadvertently lifts the lid on exactly why Fernandes surely won’t be tempted by a move across London this summer:
Fernandes is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also fill in as an attacking midfielder if required. He is already quite familiar with the Premier League and won’t take much time to adjust to life at Chelsea.

Fernandes would undoubtedly enhance the quality of Liam Rosenior’s midfield department. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular first-team spot at Stamford Bridge in the coming years.
And therein lies the truth. Fernandes is no mug. He’s breaking into the Portuguese national side largely thanks to playing week in, week out for West Ham and wowing an international audience. At this stage in his development, the last thing he needs is to sink without trace into Chelsea’s bloated squad of unused players: Just ask Axel Disasi.
In any case David Sullivan is no mug and providing West Ham secure their Premier League spot, Sullivan will most likely look to ‘do a Declan‘ with Fernandes and hold onto him for another season in the expectation that £60 million will become a £100 million deal if Fernandes delivers on his potential.
