Portuguese who beat star-studded Flying Eagles with future Real Madrid players named Ghana coach

Through a statement on their official website, the Ghana Football Association confirmed the appointment of Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United coach is expected to lead the Black Stars at the 2026 Fifa World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Prior to Queiroz's appointment, Ghana had been without a head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo just hours after the four-time African champions were beaten by Germany in a friendly.

Queiroz brings extensive international experience, having previously managed the national teams of Portugal, South Africa, Egypt, Qatar, Iran, Colombia and Oman.

Born in the Mozambique, the Portuguese coach was in charge of his country when they defeated a star-studded Flying Eagles side 2–0 in the final of the 1989 Fifa World Youth Championship.

Mutiu Adepoju, Oladimeji Lawal and Christopher Ohenhen, who later featured for the Super Eagles, were key members of that Flying Eagles squad that started the final against Portugal.

Their performances at the tournament in Saudi Arabia attracted the attention of Real Madrid, who signed the trio to youth-team contracts.
