Bayern Munich’s next fixture is arguably the season’s most important one—the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter final against Real Madrid.
For such a monumental fixture, it is essential to have the best possible referee—someone impartial and just.
Alas, one can only dream of such things when Real Madrid are involved.
Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić will be officiating the game. Vinčić is a referee with a lot of UCL experience under his belt, and Bayern are no strangers to his officiating either. Here are the previous Bayern games he has been in charge of:
Not very encouraging, is it? 2 wins, 2 draws, and a loss. The draw vs Villarreal ended up getting Bayern knocked out of the UCL in 2022, so some might even see that as a loss. Oh wait, as did the draw vs. Inter in 2025. But I digress.
Bayern’s win percentage with Slavko officiating is a paltry 40%. And yes, he also refereed that 4-1 loss to FC Barcelona in the group stages 2 seasons ago.
Meanwhile, the story is quite different from a Real Madrid perspective:
Three wins and a single loss. A win percentage of 75%, which includes a controversial win against Benfica in this season’s group stages and a UCL final win vs. Borussia Dortmund in 2023/24. Unfortunately, there is a pattern here.
Social media remembers some egregious calls from the years past, such as this concerning decision from the referee in the UCL final of 2023/24. Yikes.
It remains to be seen whether the pattern will continue in this tie. It is up to Bayern Munich to put the game out of Real Madrid’s reach—end all hopes of a remontada early and allow no room for officiating to make the difference. A quick 2-3 goals scored in the first half could go a long way to putting the game out of the reach of Real Madrid.
And out of reach of the refereeing.
