Dominic Calvert-Lewin revealed he had to alert the referee to the hair-pull incident that saw Lisandro Martinez sent off in Manchester United's defeat to Leeds.

United trailed their rivals 2-0 at half-time and their bid to stage a comeback was made even tougher when Martinez was sent off in the second half. The United defender tussled for the ball with Calvert-Lewin and replays showed he grabbed hold of his opponent's hair during the clash.

VAR intervened and after referee Paul Tierney consulted the pitchside monitor he showed a red card to Martinez.

Calvert-Lewin was asked by Sky Sports after the game whether he felt the red card was fair, responding: "I don't know, I don't make the rules. I felt my hair get pulled and obviously I told the ref, he's the one that makes the decisions, at the end of the day. Unfortunate for him [Martinez], whether he's meant it or not, I don't hold no grudges, but it is what it is."

United rallied after Martinez's dismissal and actually looked a better team when playing with 10 men. Casemiro pulled one back for the hosts and very nearly doubled his account to earn a point for United, only for Calvert-Lewin to head his effort off the line.

"I was just in the moment, just switched on and engaged, waiting for the ball to come in and doing my job," Calvert-Lewin said of his goal line clearance. "Thankfully I was there this time to clear the ball off the line and arguably make up for the ones I should have put away at the other end!"

The defeat leaves United level on points with Aston Villa in the table, though they are still seven ahead of Chelsea in the race for a spot in the top five.

Next up for Carrick's side is a trip to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
