Szoboszlai apologises for fan misunderstanding after Liverpool loss

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai apologises after his reaction to jeering fans following the Man City defeat was misinterpreted as sarcasm.

LIVERPOOL: Dominik Szoboszlai has apologised to Liverpool supporters following a misunderstanding over his reaction to jeers after a heavy defeat. The incident occurred as players went to applaud fans following a 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final loss at Manchester City.

Szoboszlai’s response of shrugging and clapping was widely seen as sarcastic frustration. He was subsequently ushered away by teammate Federico Chiesa.

The Hungary midfielder moved to clarify his actions ahead of Tuesday’s crucial Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain. “Maybe it was a misunderstanding between me and the fans,” Szoboszlai told reporters.

“I didn’t mean it in a bad way. Obviously I know what the fans mean to this club and what the club means to the fans.” He emphasised the mutual respect between the team and its supporters.

“If it was a misunderstanding then I apologise,” he stated. “I’m not feeling better than them, I feel exactly the same as they do.”

Liverpool face a steep challenge to overturn a first-leg deficit against the reigning champions PSG. Szoboszlai vowed the team would give everything in the return leg at Anfield.

“We’re going to go all in and give our best. I’m ready to die on the pitch tomorrow,” he declared. He promised a different performance from the lacklustre display in Paris.

“It is going to be a different game from the first leg. We are going to be doing stuff in a different way.” Szoboszlai expressed the squad’s collective desire to progress.

“I can speak for all of the players because we want it so bad. Anything can happen in one game at Anfield.”
