What Brice Samba did in Rennes clash will revoke Nottingham Forest memories of 2021/22

Brice Samba was a main player in the Nottingham Forest promotion-winning campaign of 2021/22.

The French custodian saved three penalties as the Reds beat Sheffield United in the semi-final to send Forest to the new Wembley for the very first time.

Samba was superb between the sticks for Forest, and it was pretty saddening when a pay dispute between him and the club led to him not getting a crack at the Premier League.

After two seasons with Lens, Samba moved to Rennes, and at the weekend, he did something that sparked memories of his time at the City Ground.

Brice Samba saves penalty in Rennes win

Rennes overcame Angers in Ligue 1 at the weekend, and despite a ferocious start to the game, the team were indebted to Samba come the end.

The goalkeeper did what Forest fans know he does best and saved a penalty to preserve the three points for his club as they continue their bid to qualify for Europe.

Samba will hope to head to the World Cup with France in the summer and he’s doing his chances no harm at all with his current form for Rennes.

At 31, this will likely be the final chance that former Forest stopper Samba has to head to a World Cup, and he will hope to get the nod when the selection is made.

Forest slipped up not keeping Samba

During a transfer window that saw Forest sign 23 new players, arguably the biggest talking point was the decision taken not to pay Samba more money.

Given that Forest signed Dean Henderson and Keylor Navas on big loan wages, it does look somewhat foolish that Samba wasn’t offered more money to stay.

Without Samba, Forest would have been nowhere near promotion to the Premier League, and the stopper merely wanted to receive recognition for his promotion efforts.

Samba remains etched into the history of Nottingham Forest for his 2021/22 efforts and after his latest penalty save, fans will be casting an eye towards Samba in the hope that he finishes the season with a flourish and makes the World Cup.
