Leeds United beat Manchester United 2-1 on Monday night to move six clear of the relegation zone with just six games to play.
Daniel Farke had it all to do at the end of November when it looked like he was staring down the barrel. Then, a three-game stretch against Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool has changed his fortunes and ultimately, his legacy at the club.
Last night, a trip to Man United looked a daunting prospect. But, a win would have been massive for United moving well clear of relegation trouble.
Man Utd 1-2 Leeds United: Whites stun Old Trafford to record historic win
Leeds came out of the blocks flying once again at Old Trafford. A Noah Okafor brace fired Leeds into dreamland on the wrong side of the Pennines. First, he followed up cross from Jayden Bogle after some strong aerial presence from Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Then, he volleyed in from the egde of the box to give United something to really cling onto.
After that, it was genuinely a story of how Leeds managed to end the game somehow not toasting a 5-0 win. Chances were flowing, but Leeds just couldn’t finish them.
Casemiro headed in midway through the second half to halve the deficit, not long after Lisandro Martinez was sent off for violent conduct.
However, despite Hail Mary attempts from the hosts, Leeds held on for a historic and absolutely huge victory. It sees us move six clear of the bottom three, with 18th occupied by Spurs.
Daniel Farke’s full-time reaction says everything for Leeds United
Whether you were cheering the boys on from that incredible away end, or cowering behind your sofa like me, you knew the magnitude of that victory.
Not only to get one over that lot, but to shake off that away form and stretch a gap over the bottom three too.
The importance of that performance and win certainly wasn’t lost on Farke. The Leeds boss was the image as Paul Tierney’s full-time whistle sounded, falling to his knees in celebration:
Very few times has Farke shown such emotion after a game has finished. Exceptions include the win over Leicester City in 2024, the win over Sunderland last season and then when promotion was sealed
All three of those were watershed moments for those seasons. In the same way, I think Farke believes this to be too. You cannot understate how big that win could be for us.
For a manager so often disregarded for his credentials at the top level, he’s got Leeds six clear with six to play. That celebration said it all.
Leeds fans don’t have many fond memories of Old Trafford. However, Farke has just made one that will go down in history, especially if it keeps us up along with the FA Cup semi-final.
