April 14 – With two months until the World Cup, Ghana have named veteran coach Carlos Queiroz as their new manager.

He succeeds Otto Addo, who was dismissed after defeats by Germany and Austria in friendlies in the recent March window. “I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career,” said Queiroz.  “Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul. I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future.”

It will be his third adventure heading an African national team after having previously managed South Africa and Egypt and Queiroz brings extensive World Cup experience to Ghana. The Black Stars will play England, Panama and Croatia in Group L of the World Cup this summer.

He led his native Portugal at the 2010 World Cup and Iran at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. He recently managed Oman, but departed after the country failed to qualify for the World Cup. In the past, he served as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and enjoyed spells as head coach at Real Madrid.

Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku disclosed that the association received over 600 applications in the first 24 hours after Addo’s departure. Slaven Bilic, Tom Saintfiet, and Kim Lars Bjorkgren reportedly made the shortlist.

Before the tournament, the Ghanians will wrap up their preparations with friendlies against Mexico and Wales.
