Leeds United did not just win at Old Trafford, they proved their system works at the highest level and Gary Neville thinks two Leeds players are crucial in making it work.
Leeds’ victory over Manchester United carried real weight. It was their first league win at Old Trafford since 1981, a result that immediately stands out on its own.
More importantly, it was how Leeds played. This was not a smash-and-grab result or a moment of fortune. It was controlled, aggressive, and built on a system that is starting to look reliable.
Gary Neville doesn’t like Leeds system, but admits it works
Gary Neville made it clear on his Sky Sports podcast that he does not usually trust this type of setup, but he says that it suits Leeds because it gets the best out of Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson.
Are we safe? Can we stop worrying now? 👊
“The reason I’m not a great fan of the system (wing-backs) is because it is difficult to find wing-backs that can do the equal attacking and defending bit. But Bogle and Gudmundsson can do that,” Neville said.
“They go forward with real energy and threat, and they have solidity with the three and Ampadu. It suits them,” he added. That is the key point. Neville is not praising the system in isolation.
He is highlighting how rare it is to find players capable of making it work. Leeds have found them. Bogle and Gudmundsson are not just filling positions. They are delivering exactly what the role demands.

Bogle and Gudmundsson make the system work
Neville’s breakdown explains why this performance stood out. Leeds’ wing-backs bring “real energy and threat” going forward, while still offering “solidity” alongside the back three and Ethan Ampadu.
That balance is what allowed Leeds to dominate key phases of the game.

They stretched Manchester United when attacking, but they never lost their shape. The structure held, the distances were right, and the system looked natural rather than forced.
This is where most teams struggle with wing-backs. The attacking intent often leaves gaps. Leeds avoided that because their players can handle both sides of the role.
Neville says Tottenham are not capable of what Leeds did
Neville’s second point pushed the argument further. He says Spurs cannot reach Leeds’ level: “Tonight, first half, they were wonderful. That is a performance that Tottenham are not capable of.
“That’s the scary thing for Tottenham. Not just six points that Leeds have gone clear, but the actual performances levels Leeds put in. Tottenham are nowhere near that.”

Leeds are now six points clear of relegation, but Neville’s focus was on something more important. The performance level is there.
This was not just about beating Manchester United. It was about producing a standard that other teams in the same fight cannot match.
Leeds’ win at Old Trafford will be remembered for the history, but the bigger takeaway is how they achieved it. This system works because Bogle and Gudmundsson make it work.
Their ability to attack and defend with equal impact gives Leeds a balance that most teams do not have. With a six-point cushion and performances of this level, Leeds are not just surviving. They are moving clear on merit.
