Report: Liverpool make official contact for 20-year-old who would command club record fee

Liverpool are searching for wide talent to replace Mohamed Salah, and 20-year-old winger Bazoumana Toure is someone they are pursuing with intent.

The Hoffenheim winger has been mentioned in Liverpool transfer rumours for the past few days, and there seems to be progress being made in discussions. Toure is an exciting Bundesliga winger who has exploded into life this season, registering three goals and 11 assists in 25 games.

He might be raw, but Liverpool have seen enough to make an approach, and they have been given a hint as to what kind of bid will be deemed acceptable — nothing but a club record fee for Hoffenheim will do.

Liverpool told price as they step up pursuit of Bazoumana Toure

Last week, Hoffenheim sporting director Andreas Schicker addressed the rumours linking his young star with a move away.

He told Sky Sports Germany: “Bazou has developed very well. We brought him in from Sweden a year and a half ago. You can see week after week what qualities he brings.

“With him, it’s like this: if there’s interest – which you can tell because he delivers week after week – then it has to be in a league that Hoffenheim hasn’t seen before.”

We only need to look back a few years to Newcastle’s acquisition of then-attacker Joelinton, who Eddie Howe transformed into an all-action number eight. He left Hoffenheim for £40 million back in 2019.

So Toure will only be available for a fee above that mark, which makes sense given his age and position.

The report from Sky Sports has Liverpool alone as the leaders in this race, ‘officially’ informing Hoffenheim of their intention to sign him. The Ivorian international is someone they have identified as a player for the future, but who can make an impact straight away if he does arrive at Anfield.

Bazoumana Toure is a more sensible choice than Yan Diomande

As the summer window approaches, and exits seem to be announced on a weekly basis, it’s becoming clear that Liverpool have a hefty recruitment job on their hands.

With Mo Salah and Andy Robertson leaving together, and Alisson Becker edging closer to a move away, it leaves Arne Slot’s squad down to its bare bones.

With that said, Liverpool have to make a good five or six signings just to have a big enough squad next season. So £45 to £50 million for Toure sounds a lot more doable than £90 million for fellow Bundesliga starlet Yan Diomande.

Are Liverpool in danger of blocking Rio’s pathway with a new signing this summer?

Should they make a new signing after all?

This is a summer for quantity over quality. Not to say we’re not looking for quality, but we need to spread funds and try to catch up to Arsenal and Man City’s superior squad depth.
