In talks: Liverpool given green light to sign born winner two years after transfer collapse

Liverpool could secure the signing of a player they tried to sign two years ago when the summer transfer window opens.

The Reds spent big last summer, splashing out more than £400million on new signings, but the 2025/26 campaign has not gone as planned, with manager Arne Slot under pressure despite having won the Premier League title in his first season in England.

But they may well go big in the transfer market again, although much could depend on if they qualify for the UEFA Champions League or not next season.

Liverpool Have Clear Advantage Over Newcastle Next Season

Liverpool sit fifth in the table - which will be good enough for Europe's premier competition next season - with six games to go, holding a four-point lead over sixth-placed Chelsea.

If they do refresh their squad - with Andy Robertson already confirmed as leaving this summer - Anthony Gordon could be a potential signing.

Liverpool tried to bring the former Everton man to the club two summers ago, and held talks with Newcastle over a deal that would have helped the Magpies with their Profit & Sustainability Rules situation.

However, Newcastle would eventually sell Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, to ease their financial concerns, leading to Gordon's move to Anfield to be called off.

Liverpool remain interested in the 25-year-old, however, who recently became Newcastle's all-time top scorer in the Champions Leagu.

The Magpies will not qualify for the top-tier competition next season and look unlikely to qualify for any European competition whatsoever, sitting 14th in the Premier League table.

And that could lead Gordon, who has been described by manager Eddie Howe as a "born winner" in the past, to look elsewhere, despite his love for the club.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano issued an update on his situation and revealed a new club has entered the fray to sign Gordon.

Anthony Gordon Has Interest From Germany This Summer

He said: "There is a possibility Newcastle sell one or two top players in the summer transfer window.

"It's about Financial Fair Play, it's about the cost of the squad, so they have to consider exits. Could be one, could be two, based on opportunities, based on proposals, based on what players want to do.

"So Anthony Gordon has chances to leave Newcastle in the summer transfer window. There is a lot of interest also in Sandro Tonali and let's see what happens with Bruno Guimaraes. I'm not saying that Newcastle are going to sell all these players, that's not the case, Newcastle will try to keep as many as possible. But at the moment, there is a possibility Anthony Gordon could be on his way out of Newcastle.

"There are several clubs interested. I would not underestimate Premier League clubs in this race for Anthony Gordon, in case there is a door open to his exit in the summer, but Bayern [Munich] are looking at wingers in the market. That's not new. We know Yan Diomande and now there are links with Anthony Gordon.

"There will be more, for sure, because Bayern are looking at wingers, but at the moment, what I'm told is that it's still early, with several clubs involved in the first round of discussions around Anthony Gordon."
