Former Wolves favourite who made FA Cup history leaves non-league club

He was a fan favourite at Wolves - and has made a big impression at a non-league club.

Former Wolves defender George Elokobi has brought to an end a glittering spell at non-league Maidstone United - that saw him achieve FA Cup glory.

The Cameroon born left back signed for Wolves for £500,000 from Colchester United and made over 100 appearances for the club in Premier League, the Championship and League One.

His career saw him head to Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and Oldham, before he returned to Colchester.

From there, he made a move into non-league at Braintree, Leyton Orient and Aldershot before he spent three seasons at Maidstone.

It was here he went from title winning captain of the club to making history in the FA Cup as a manager.

He was only due to spend a season at the club as a player, but he stayed and took on a mentoring role in the club’s academy during Covid alongside first team duties.

He won the National League South as a player, before he ended his playing days and was soon instilled as caretaker manager.

That then became permanent and the former Wolves man went about rebuilding his squad.

The highlight of his time at the club came two seasons ago - when Maidstone broke a record to become the lowest ranked side since 1978 to reach the last 16 of the FA Cup.

They beat League One and Two sides before a win over Ipswich Town set up a clash with Coventry City.

But now it has been confirmed that the former Wolves man is set to depart the club.

They did want to keep the ex-defender, but have said with club finances under pressure and negotiations over a sale taking longer than expected, Elokobi has confirmed he will be stepping down at the end of the season.

The former Wolves man said: “Football is about making memories that will last forever. Together through passion, values and belief we created some magical moments that will connect us for life.

“My gratitude to our owners (Terry and Oliver), Director of Football (Bill Williams), the players and management team and all the staff at the football club and mostly to our wonderful supporters and wider community.”
