West Ham fans want £35m Wolves ace signed after watching him at the London Stadium

In what was a truly seismic week at the bottom of the Premier League, West Ham United leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspur, moved to within touching distance of Nottingham Forest, and put Wolves on the brink of the drop.

If any of Rob Edwards’ charges are hoping to remain in the top-flight for 2026/27, they did not do their chances much good with a thumping 4-0 defeat at the London Stadium.

Hammers News suggested in the build up to Friday’s clash that West Ham may look at Molineux in pursuit of the another Mateus Fernandes-style reinforcement. Finishing rock bottom with Southampton last season and a revelation this, Fernandes’ outstanding debut season as a West Ham United player is proof that finishing 20th does not necessarily mean said player should be written off.

Where will West Ham finish this season? 📈 And who will be relegated? ⬇️

West Ham United fans may welcome Wolves’ Joao Gomes

At the time of writing, 60 per cent of our readers selected Joao Gomes as the signing they would most like to see the Hammers make from relegation-bound Wolves and Burnley.

Reportedly valued at around £35 million, it is not that long since Brazil international Gomes was being talked about as one of the best all-round midfielders outside of the Premier League’s so-called elite.

As Freddie Potts’ influence wanes following a bright start, with Soungoutou Magassa yet to impress consistently, and with Tomas Soucek not getting any younger, a combative, all-action powerhouse in the centre of the park would be welcomed at West Ham. At that price-point, there might not be many better options on the market than Gomes.

Have you ever seen a turnaroud as dramatic as Dinos? ⚽ ⚽ 🇬🇷

West Ham United's Konstantinos Mavropanos celebrates scoring his side's first goal during the Premier League match between West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers at London Stadium on April 10, 2026 in London, United Kingdom.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

“He’s a super talent,” former West Ham midfielder and ex-Wolves boss Gary O’Neil said shortly after Gomes arrived at Molineux from Flamengo in 2023. “As a starting point, with the qualities he has, he’s at a very, very good level.”

Even on a poor night for Wolves – Taty Castellanos and Dinos Mavropanos scored twice apiece in a must-win encounter – Gomes won three tackles, completed three dribbles, and hit the target with 87 per cent of his passes at the London Stadium.

Once again, a standout performer in a dark era.

Zian Flemming, the stylish Burnley forward with eight goals in 15 Premier League starts, finished a distant second behind Gomes in our poll.
